JODOIN AND HAIGHT SWEEP THEIR CLASSES AT BUTTONWILLOW

David Jodoin, driving his #717 Anytime Electric/Mar Vista White 1998 BMW M3 once again swept both days of the NASA weekend at Buttonwillow. Running the #1 CCW with Star Mazda configuration and battling temperatures right around 100 F, Jodoin easily bested the slim TTB field, and consistently ran times faster than the all but one car in the TTS Field.

What made the great performance even more impressive is that the 717 car just received a fresh rebuild of its motor prior to the event. The car had been having some issues with a lifter sticking and needed new motor mounts installed, so Jodoin made the call to pull the motor to do a detailed inspection. Good thing he did, as there was a lot more issues with the 110,000 mile motor than anyone had anticipated. Fortunately, Midnight Oil had the resources on hand to complete the rebuild and have the car back in Jodoin’s hands in just a few days, well ahead of schedule and in plenty of time to make the Buttonwillow event.

This makes Jodoin’s third consecutive sweep of the TTB field of SoCal NASA Time Trial Series this year. The big question is how Jodoin will fare at Cal Speedway July 31st and August 1st, as the higher horsepower cars will have a big advantage on the ROVAL course and it’s long front straight.

When asked about the upcoming event, Jodoin said “We’re confident the superior handling of the car and consistent power will prove to be quite the competitive package, even for the challenges of California Speedway.”

Also at Buttonwillow, the newest driver to join the Midnight Oil fold, long time NASA competitor and Instructor, Fulton Haight, also swept his respective class, TTD, at Buttonwillow. Haight brought his E36 M3 down to Midnight Oil in San Diego all the way from the Los Angeles area after witnessing the way Jodoin’s car ate up the field and the track record at Willow Springs. The boys at Midnight Oil began the transformation of the next track beast with some basic upgrades and performed required maintenance to the car which included some new suspension bushings as well as new pads and rotors. But the big change was the installation of an AST 4200 suspension and Vorshlag Camber plates, which completely overhauled the handling on the E36 that was unruly at best in its last event.

Things should get interesting at Cal Speedway as the Magnus Racing RX8, with it’s new roll cage that was fabricated and installed by Midnight Oil Motors, takes on Haight in TTD. The Magnus Racing RX8 will also be making it’s debut in the Performance Touring Series (PTD) at Cal Speedway.

The upcoming NASA event at Cal Speedway should be a big event for the Midnight Oil team, as Shawn Meze, NASA Super Touring National Director, Asst. Time Trial National Director and Co-Director of the National Performance Touring Series, makes his debut driving the 241 car, an S50 B32 powered E36... The car will see a lot of action at California Speedway competing both days in the NASA German Touring Series and Time Trial and will be doing some testing in Super Touring 2 (ST2) on Saturday.

The new Midnight Oil Spec E30 is expected to make it’s debut at Cal Speedway. The freshly built car will be driven by long time NASA SoCal HPDE Director, John Matthew.

---

We encourage everyone in the Southern California area to come check out the event at Cal Speedway July 30th through August 1st. Feel free to stop by our garage – though with at least seven cars that we’re supporting in races, time trial and HPDE, we’re going to be busy; but always welcome the opportunity to talk about cars and racing.

Hope to see you there!

JODOIN DESTROYS NASA TTB TRACK RECORD IN MIDNGHT OIL MOTORS PREPPED M3 AT WILLOW SPRINGS

Just a few weeks after sweeping the NASA TTB field at Buttonwillow Raceway by more than a full second each day, David Jodoin, driving his white Anytime Electric/Mar Vista Construction 1999 M3 prepared and supported by Midnight Oil Motors, LLC, not only repeated his domination of the TTB field, but set a new track record in the class.

Jodoin ran his M3 against a field dominated by Camaros and Mustangs that made substantially more horsepower. Utilizing only a few simple bolt-ons to make more power and not running any aftermarket aero components, suspension set up was key to the effort.

Part of the changes to the 717 car for this weekend included installing a new cage. When they were done, the car went on the scales and after a few minor tweaks, it sat at 50.5/49.5 front to rear weight and a perfect 50/50 cross weight. Besides the cage, the only changes made for Willow Springs were revising the Cold Air Intake and installing a new tune provided by Active Autowerke – which really helped smooth out the mid range and take advantage of the intake and exhaust work by Midnight.

“The boys at Midnight Oil really hit the nail on the head in building and setting up the car. I couldn’t be happier with the work that they’ve done. Their trackside support has made my success possible.” said Jodoin.

With temperatures in the high 70’s on Saturday, down in the 40’s Sunday morning and winds gusting up to 50 mph from the west, Jodoin and Midnight Oil had their work cut out for them.

Having scored wins in all four days he’s competed, Jodoin is in a good position to chase down the NASA SoCal Region TTB championship and, hopefully, chased down a few records.

In other news, Team Magnus Racing, a partner with Midnight Oil, also swept their respective NASA Time Trial Field this weekend in their “Two Ton Miata.” The $500 V-12 Jaguar XJS is actually a previously wrecked (in a major way) salvage title car that is built for and competes in the LeMons Races on the West Coast. Making its first appearance at a NASA Time Trial event, co-driven by John Magnussen and Shawn Meze in TTD, the car was a real crowd pleaser and drew lots of attention with its 315mm Nitto NT05 street tires (which were good for a whopping 28 points in class). Rumor has it that the Crew Chief for the LeMons car is somehow affiliated with Midnight Oil Motors, LLC, but since there are no known pics of him with the car, it cannot be confirmed. DAVID JODOIN SWEEPS HIS CLASS AT BUTTONWILLOW

David Jodoin, driving his #717 Anytime Electric/Mar Vista Construction 1999 M3 proudly prepared by Midnight Oil Motors, LLC, swept his class at Buttonwillow this past weekend. Running in Time Trial Class TTB.  Jodoin laid down a 2:02.7 on Saturday and a 2:03.1, beating his closest in class competition by a full one second on Saturday and an unheard of 1.5 seconds on Sunday.  Jodoin also finished ahead of a number of higher horsepower TTS cars on both days.

When asked about the great performance at Buttonwillow, Jodoin said "This Midnight Oil M3 performed flawlessly, however, without a cage installed, I was only running about 80% so I know there's more time left in the Midnight Oil prepped M3.  With the cage being fabricated and installed by the boys at Midnight Oil before the next event at Willow Springs and some tweaks to the software, we're only going to get faster. I always use the track records as my time to beat; with the help of the Midnight Oil crew and a little luck I hope to set a few of my own.”

Midnight Oil Motors, LLC began working with Jodoin in late 2009 after he purchased the 1999 M3.  Going through a gradual upgrade program, the M3 and Jodoin continue to improve as Jodoin really gets to know the chassis and set up adjustments are made are made to suit his driving style.  Even though Jodoin missed the first two events of the year, with the strong performance this weekend, he has the SoCal TTB Championship and Nationals in his sights.  Midnight Oil Motors will be there to support him every step of the way.
